Comments :

Apologies about lack of P/A during parts of the day – the battery (3 different ones) eventually went flat.  Towards the end we used Bill Consterdine’s P/A system for starting races to some effect

All the male 3x800m records were broken, but these events were held for the first time last year.

Medley Relay times show significant improvement on last year, which again was the first year we have held them.  We had full turn out’s in the U15 Medley Relays!

I was asked about “turn out”, hence the data below :

                            Teams Entered   Took Part

Macclesfield                44 (38)             37

Vale Royal                  31 (32)             16

Warrington                  30 (36)             19

West Cheshire            30 (29)             23

Crewe & Nantwich      15(11)              15

Halton & Frodsham     13 (14)               8

Handforth W&AE        6 (3)                   5

Wilmslow                     3 (-)                   3

(figures in () are 2006 entries)

A Historical Note :

The imperial version of our Senior Medley Relay (220,220,440,880yds – totalling 1 mile as against our 1600m which is about 9.35m short of a mile) was an AAA Championship event for (male) clubs in the period 1911 to 1926 after which it was replaced by the 4x440yd relay.  The now seems to be no National track relay championships.

The fastest time recorded during those championships was 3m31.6s in 1914 by a team from Polytechnic Harriers.  Although we had no male teams turn out this year – the best time from last year in our metric version was 3m52.4s

(information taken from “The AAA Championships 1880-1939” by Ian Buchanan, published by NUTS in 2003).
